The Rose Festival is a truly extraordinary event in Morocco. Well-known around the world for its beautiful desert landscapes, Morocco is a great place for holidaymakers to get away from it all. As well as the idyllic setting of the Sahara desert, this tourist destination has other attractions to see, such as the Valley of the Roses. Located in southern Morocco, at the foot of the High Atlas mountains, this valley hosts a unique event every year. Discover the Rose Festival Morocco or moussem of roses.

Focus on the Moroccan Rose Festival

The Rose Festival is a Moroccan festival celebrating the rose harvest season. It is a celebration of nature and the benefits it provides. As its name suggests, this festival is an ode to the Damascus rose (Rosa Damascena) and takes place in Kalaat M'Gouna. For 3 days, this Moroccan region hosts a festival attended by thousands of Moroccans and foreign tourists. Music, traditional songs and folk dances enliven this celebration. There is also a parade of rose petal floats and the election of a Rose Queen.

This is one of the tourist activities for a stay in Ouarzazate.

A brief history of damask roses

According to oral legend, damask roses were brought to Morocco by Berber pilgrims after a trip to Mecca. Charmed by the beauty and fragrance of the rose, they decided to bring some back to Morocco. They planted them in the 10th century in the Kalaat M'Gouna region, near Ouarzazate. Over time, Damask roses spread to embellish and perfume the area at the foot of the High Atlas mountains. Today, it is a tourist site recognised around the world as the famous valley of roses.

The Rose Festival, a not-to-be-missed cultural event

Morocco offers a range of tourist activities to suit all tastes and desires. In particular, you can go on camel or dromedary rides. For thrill-seekers, there's the bivouac in the Saharan desert in a Berber tent. It's the ideal way to immerse yourself in the nomadic way of life and watch a breathtaking sunset. On the other hand, to take part in this Moroccan tradition rich in joy, conviviality and exchange, opt for the rose moussem. This rose festival is held every year in mid-May.

At the request of tour organisers in Morocco, the Rose Festival has been extended to the beginning of June.
